Versatile and durable, wool rugs are a popular choice for their natural fibres and ease of maintenance. If you’re considering a wool rug to add warmth and comfort into your home, we explore the ins and outs of wool rugs, including wool rug care and common customer questions.
Many of the benefits of wool rugs stem from the fact that wool is a natural fibre. That makes it resilient and long lasting while offering a luxurious feel underfoot. With proper care and maintenance, a wool rug can last for many years without showing signs of wear and tear.
Wool rugs also have excellent insulation properties. They help to create a cosy and warm atmosphere in winter and remain cool in the summer. They’re hypoallergenic and the weave helps to naturally resist dust mites, mould and mildew.
As a renewable and biodegradable resource, wool rugs are also an eco-friendly choice.
Featuring the Lillico Rug in Natural.
Shedding is common with all rugs, particularly so with rugs made from natural fibres, such as wool. This is due to the way the rugs are crafted by spinning the fibres together. Wool rugs shedding is the result of small fragments breaking off and gathering together.
You can expect the shedding to last up to about nine months, gradually reducing with use and time. The best way to deal with wool rug shedding is through regular vacuuming. We recommend using a vacuum cleaner with a non-rotating head on a low suction setting. Never use a rotating head vacuum cleaner as this can cause irreparable damage to wool rugs.
An underlay under the rug will also help to minimise wear and tear and assist with reducing the amount of shedding.
Featuring the Antipodes Organic Rug in Natural and Seymour Chair.
Cleaning a wool rug doesn’t have to be a daunting task. It helps that wool is naturally stain resistant.
As with shedding, regular vacuuming will help to maintain the longevity of your wool rug. We recommend weekly vacuuming for the life of the rug.
One important rule of wool rug cleaning is to attend to spills and stains promptly. For liquid spills, use a cloth or paper towel to carefully blot the spill. Avoid rubbing the spill as this can cause further damage to the rug. For food spills, carefully scoop the food with a spoon and blot as per liquid spills.
